Why listing your services can help you get more customers

When we think about optimizing a Google Business Profile, we usually focus on reviews, photos, or the primary category. However, there’s one section many businesses overlook that can also help improve their visibility: the services list.

Your customers don't always search by business type

People don’t always search for the type of business they need — sometimes they search for the specific service they want. They don’t always search for “dental clinic,” but for “dental implants” or “Invisalign orthodontics.” They don’t always search for “recording studio,” but for “studio to record a demo” or “podcast recording studios.”

All of these services can be offered by the same recording studio or the same dental clinic, but they respond to different needs and different searches.

That’s why the more clearly you list the services you offer on your Business Profile, the more information Google has to understand which searches your business is relevant for

From a general category to specific services

On your Google Business Profile, you can select a primary category and additional categories that help define what your business does. But you can also specify the concrete services you offer within those activities.

And that’s exactly where many profiles fall short.

For example:

  • Cleaning company → office cleaning, community/building cleaning, window cleaning, post-construction cleaning.
  • Dental clinic → teeth cleaning, teeth whitening, dental implants, orthodontics, fillings, Invisalign.
  • Hair salon → children’s haircuts, hair coloring, hair straightening, hair treatments, updos and styling for events.

The category helps Google understand what type of business you are. The services list adds another layer of detail, letting Google know exactly what a customer can actually book with you.

This isn’t about stuffing keywords or padding your profile with repeated terms. It’s about reflecting real services that meet different needs — services your potential customers may already be searching for.

How to do it right

Start by making a list of all the services you actually offer. Try to use clear, natural names — the way a person would actually search for them on Google.

Then add them to the services section of your Business Profile, under the corresponding category, and review them from time to time.

For example, a clinic might have “Dental Clinic” and “Orthodontics” as categories. Under the first, it could include services like teeth cleaning, fillings, implants, or whitening, while under the orthodontics category it could add invisible aligners, braces, or orthodontic check-ups.

This way, services are better organized and help describe more precisely what the business offers within each activity.

Businesses evolve: new services appear, others are discontinued, and the way customers search for them can also change.

A simple opportunity to improve your visibility on Google

Adding services doesn’t guarantee better rankings on Google Maps by itself. A business’s visibility depends on many factors. However, filling out this information properly helps Google better understand your business and the situations where it may be relevant to a search.

The idea is simple: if you offer ten different services, don’t hide them all behind a single generic category.

The better you explain what you do and what services a customer can hire you for, the easier it will be for Google to match your business with the right searches.
